A dog’s freedom needs to be earned in increments.  A puppy should be physically attached or in sight of the caregiver at all times.  After all, isn’t that what a good pack leader does?

It’s the duty of the highest ranking alpha member to protect the lower ranking members.  This flies in the face of people who buy dogs for protection.

In my view, you should protect your dog unless your dog has gone through bite work and protection training.  It is a mistake to think that your dog will know what to do when the time comes.

With some dogs, you might be right.  The dog will attack and know what to do when the time comes.  However, if a strange dog approaches that is off leash off leash, you should scare or force the dog away.

You can even use citronella spray if a dangerous doggy approaches.  This is one way to earn your dog’s trust and respect.
