Submissive jumping up on people?  Can such a thing exist?  We have been told that it’s a “dominance issue” when dogs jump up on humans.

This is not always the case.  Yes, it’s true that a dog that forcefully begs to be petted is a problem.  You don’t want a dog that is lifting your arm with her nose in an attempt to get petted.

However, there is something that I would call “submissive jumping” on the owner.  IT’s called submissive licking in the wild.

When a dog submissively licks at your mouth, it is a throwback to something that all puppies do in nature.  The litter will lick at the mouth of the adult dogs.

The adult dogs then regurgitate for the pups.  I’m not advocating throwing up in order to appease your dogs.

What I am saying is that there are different types of jumping up.  When a dog submissively tries to lick my mouth, I act aloof.

Alpha dogs act kind of aloof.  It’s hard to imagine but not all alpha dogs behave like dictators.
