I was philosophizing today about what role treats play in a dog’s conditioning. If you’ve ever seen clicker trainers then you’ll know treats are a big deal. The concept is simple. Every time you click, you give the dog a treat.

Eventually, you ween them off of the treat. The sounder of the clicker itself becomes enough of a reinforcer. Then, you can give treats only when they really earn it or raise the bar on what they have to do.

I wonder what role the “treat” plays in the dog’s brain.

In nature, dogs work in unison to bring down prey larger than themselves. Buy, one dog has to be brave enough to take the first bite.

That dog provides the meal in a way. Perhaps that’s what role the treat plays. It reminds the dog that you are the meal provider.
